The Toucans of Tortuga

On my 55th birthday, I crossed "photographing the birds of Costa Rica" off my bucket list.

One of the most recognizable birds of Costa Rica is the Toucan.

Above is a Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan

Although there are about 40 different toucans, my Costa Rica bird book shows five.

We were lucky enough t see three of the five species while in Tortuga.

They usually live in pairs or small flocks.

Toucans eat mostly small fruit, which they can easily peel and squash
with their unique, large, sharp, saw-like bills.

Toucans are traditionally seen as conduits between the worlds of the living and the spirits.
